Apple paid only 1.9 pct tax on earnings outside US

Apple Inc. paid a rate of only 1.9 percent income tax on its earnings outside the U.S. in its latest fiscal year, a regulatory filing by the company shows. Apple Inc. paid an income tax rate of only 1.9 percent on its earnings outside the U.S. in its latest fiscal year, a regulatory filing by the company shows.

The world's most valuable company paid $713 million in tax on foreign earnings of $36.8 billion in the fiscal year ended Sept. 29, according to the financial statement filed on Oct. 31. The foreign earnings were up 53 percent from fiscal 2011, when Apple earned $24 billion outside the U.S. and paid income tax of 2.5 percent on it.

The tech giant's foreign tax rate compares with the general U.S. corporate tax rate of 35 percent.

Apple may pay some income taxes on its profit to the country in which it sells its products, but it minimizes them by using various accounting moves to shift profits to countries with low tax rates. For example the strategy known as "Double Irish With a Dutch Sandwich," routes profits through Irish and Dutch subsidiaries and then to the Caribbean.

Other multinational corporations also use such tax techniques, which are legal.

Like other big companies, Apple leaves cash overseas. If it brought it home to the U.S., it would have to pay U.S. corporate taxes on the money. The cash that Apple has left overseas as of Sept. 29 has mounted to a stunning $82.6 billion, up from $74 billion as of June 30.

Where Apple does differ from other companies is that it sets aside a portion of the foreign profits, marking them as subject to U.S. taxes sometime in the future.

When Apple reports quarterly results, it records that portion of the taxes as a liability, which is subtracted from its profits even though it hasn't actually paid the taxes.

Tax experts say the company could easily eliminate these "phantom" tax obligations. That would boost Apple's profits for the past three years by as much $10.5 billion, according to calculations by The Associated Press reported in July.

While investors might rejoice if Apple suddenly added $10.5 billion to its profits, unilaterally erasing a massive U.S. tax obligation could tarnish its reputation as a relatively responsible payer of U.S. taxes. Instead, the company is lobbying to change U.S. law so that it can erase its liabilities in a less conspicuous fashion.

Overall Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple had net income of $41.7 billion, or $44.15 per share, in fiscal 2012. That was up 61 percent from $25.9 billion, or $27.68 per share, in fiscal 2011.

Birth Control Pills Linked to Risk of Blood Clots in Women

A study conducted by the US FDA on the relation of drospirenone-containing birth control pills to blood clots and blockage of arteries has come out with affirmative results.

The findings of this study were published in the latest online edition of the journal Contraception.

Birth Control Pills

Drospirenone ? The Formulation

Drospirenone (DRSP) is a synthetic progesterone, a female hormone. It is one of the ingredients used in some of the female oral contraceptive pills classified as combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC). In the past decade, USFDA has approved three such CHCs which are regularly used by women as a method of contraception.

Since then medical practitioners have seen a phenomenal rise in the number of women suffering from venous thromboembolic events (VTE). The condition VTE is generally very uncommon. But recently, many women are found to be suffering from this condition, especially those using CHCs containing the synthetic hormone DRSP. This has led to the physicians suspecting the role of DSRP in the development of this condition.

The Study

Dr. Stephen Sidney, director of the Research clinics, Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, conducted a thorough research on the topic along with his team of scientists. For the study, Dr. Stephen and his associates conducted a group study among 573,680 women aged between 10-55 years.

They were tagged as new users who were exposed to one of the three Drospirenone-containing CHCs available in the market, for the first time, during the study period. The participants were obtained from two healthcare programs ? Kaiser Permanente project and the Medicaid programs of Tennessee and Washington.

From the statistics obtained through these participants, it was found that these new users were:

  1. 77% more at risk of being hospitalized due to venous thrombotic events (VTE) than those who used low dose CHCs.
  2. 100% more at risk of being hospitalized due to arterial thrombotic events (ATE) than those who used low dose CHCs.

Conclusion

Based on this study and the results, the FDA recommends that before starting on a contraceptive it is important for a woman to speak to her physician about the risks of blood clots due to its use. This could prevent unnecessary complications among women who are especially prone to such health risks.

Credit Card Interest Rate Roundup | Bankrate.com

  • 14.02% (all fixed)
  • 14.59% (all variable)

The average annual percentage rate for variable-rate credit cards edged up 2 basis points to 14.59 percent from 14.57 percent, according to Bankrate's latest survey of interest rates. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point. The average APR for fixed-rate credit cards remained at 14.02 percent for the third consecutive week.

Credit card companies are offering victims of superstorm Sandy -- technically a post-tropical cyclone at landfall -- some relief. JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo are offering to waive late fees on credit card bills, and Citi also is providing financial assistance to those affected. Bank of America, Capital One and American Express are encouraging cardholders to call customer service if they have trouble meeting payments.
