Twitter's Vine features porn video as 'Editor's Pick'

11 hrs.

Since Vine, Twitter's video-sharing service, launched on Thursday, it's been plagued by all sorts of woes. We noticed that it lacks privacy settings and?abuse prevention measures, Facebook prevented it from finding any friends through the social network, and now ... well, now pornographic?content has slipped?into Vine's?"Editor's Picks" section.

Vine's a rather neat service, in theory. If you've got an iOS device, you can create and share Vine videos. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once done, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook. You can also use the app to browse through popular videos and those featured as "Editor's Picks."

And that's where Vine's latest troubles appear. On Monday morning, a video shared by "nsfwvine" ??an account created for the sole purpose of posting pornographic videos to Vine (hence the "Not Safe For Work" part of the name)???received the service's "Editor's Pick" badge of honor.

While the video did lose the "Editor's Pick" badge later in the morning, it was not removed from the service. Instead, it now carries a warning message declaring that the video?"may contain sensitive content" and requires a tap to be viewed. (From what we can tell, this warning message is automatically added to videos which are reported as inappropriate by Vine users.)

We have reached out to Twitter for more information regarding how the video in question?? which shows a young woman and a?sex toy?? was chosen as an "Editor's Pick." We wondered if some sort of automated process may be involved in the selection. A Twitter spokesperson explained that an actual person was actually to blame. "A human error resulted in a video with adult content becoming one of the videos in Editor's Picks," she wrote in an email to NBC News. "[U]pon realizing this mistake we removed the video immediately. We apologize to our users for the error."

We have also contacted Apple, as we suspect the Cupertino-based company is probably not all too happy about pornographic content being?prominently?featured in an iOS app. (It has banned apps for far less racy issues in the past.)

In the meantime, obscene material continues to flood into Vine. Several accounts ? including "nsfwvine" ? have been posting pornographic clips since Vine launched last week. Not all of porn clips?carry the "sensitive content" warning yet and it's not clear if any have been removed so far.

"Wow. How did this happen, Vine?" a user asked?on one of the videos, while another wondered "[c]an I flag this as inappropriate more than once?"

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

DARPA's 1.8-gigapixel cam touts surveillance from 20,000 feet (video)

DNP 18gigapixel drone cam from DARPA touts surveillance from 20,000 feet

It's been three years since we first heard about DARPA's ARGUS-IS, but thanks to a PBS Nova special entitled "Rise of the Drones," we finally have more information about the 1.8-gigapixel camera that is supposedly the highest-resolution surveillance system in the world. The documentary showed video footage of the imaging system in action, though the camera itself remains shrouded in mystery for security reasons. Designed to be used with UAVs like the Predator, the ARGUS-IS (which stands for Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance - Imaging System) can spot a six-inch object within a ten square mile radius from 20,000 feet in the air. As shown in the clip after the break, the high-res cam doesn't quite reveal facial features, but you can spot details like a bird flying around a building and the color of someone's clothes.

The video goes on to reveal that the camera's internals are actually a collection of 368 sensors that are identical to the ones found in 5-megapixel smartphones. But the ARGUS-IS wouldn't be much without the processing power of the platform behind it. We're not entirely sure how this is done, but the camera allegedly streams around 1 million terabytes (that's an exabyte, folks) of video, which adds up to roughly 5,000 hours of HD footage per day. Thankfully, there's software that helps guys on the ground filter through the mass of data. As seen in the image above, it lets them track moving objects with up to 65 simultaneous windows. The military potential here is obvious, but DARPA is keeping mum on any future implementations of the ARGUS-IS -- or if it's been in use all this time.

Salmonella Outbreak Blamed for 16 Illnesses in 5 States

At least 16 people in five different states have fallen ill with salmonella. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Associated Press and other media outlets on Monday that the salmonella has been linked to ground beef sold by two different Michigan businesses.

The businesses in question, Gab Halal Foods and Jouni Meats, are both located in the Metro Detroit area. Both businesses issued recalls for a combined total of more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef late last week.

Here is some of the key information that has emerged about the salmonella outbreak as of Monday.

* Gab Halal Foods, which is located in Troy, Mich., issued a recall for "approximately 550 pounds" of ground beef that had been sold through its facility. The beef in question had been produced between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10 of last year.

* Jouni Meats, which is located in Sterling Heights, Mich., had actually issued its recall first, for 500 pounds of ground beef that had been produced at its facility between Dec. 4 and Dec. 9 of last year.

* The majority of salmonella cases have been reported in Michigan, with at least seven cases stemming from the exact same restaurant, where patrons had reportedly consumed raw kibbeh.

* According to reports by Reuters and other media outlets on Monday, nine of the 16 people that have fallen ill with salmonella are from Michigan, while an additional three cases have been identified in Wisconsin, two in Illinois, and one each in Arizona and Iowa.

* No deaths have been reported so far, but at least half of those that have fallen ill with the strain of salmonella linked to the two Michigan businesses have had to be hospitalized.

* Jouni Meats and Gab Halal Foods are individually owned by a pair of brothers. The owner of Jouni Meats, Khalil Jouni, told Reuters on Monday that he believed that the meat may have been tainted elsewhere, as his facility distributed beef to many other local businesses without any report of further illnesses.

* As the Detroit Free Press noted on Monday, salmonella can affect people of all ages. Those affected so far range in age from 2 to 87 years of age. Young children and seniors are likely to be hit harder by the disease than others.

* Various media outlets have noted that this particular strain of salmonella, known as salmonella Typhimurium, is fairly rare in and of itself. More specifically, according to a report by NBC News, the "genetic fingerprint" of this strain has been "rarely seen previously."

* A person who becomes ill with salmonella typically suffers from abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever, all of which manifest themselves within 12-72 hours "after infection," as noted by the Detroit Free Press.

'When The Zombies Come,' Apocalypse Prep Documentary, Offends ACE Hardware (VIDEO)

Employees at an ACE Hardware store in rural Georgia turned their love of AMC's "The Walking Dead" into a zombie obsession. But their preparations for a zombie apocalypse, captured in a documentary accepted by the Sundance Film Festival, have "offended" ACE Hardware and may cost some participants their jobs.

A group of college students from Georgia State are behind the pseudo-mockumentary, "When the Zombies Come," about the zombie-loving employees of a Lawrenceville, Ga., ACE Hardware store.

The characters' obsession has warped the way they see the store and its customers. Perhaps most affected is the self-professed group leader, Alex Warner, who describes in the short film how he is using tools available at the store to prepare a zombie apocalypse, should one ever arrive.

"It turns out there's a lot of weapons we can use to kill zombies," he says in the Jon Hurst-directed film. "And people don't look at you much as crazy when you're making a potato gun, fill it up with sockets to shoot, if you say you're gonna kill zombies with it instead of little kids."

Warner goes on to explain his plans to make the ACE Hardware in Lawrenceville his base of operations during a disaster scenario. "I took it a little overboard," he admits, adding later, "I was like, 'Everyone can come, just no kids and no bitches, because it's all about survival. We're not there to take care of everybody."

Warner also details the weapons he will use and the steps he will take to survive a rise of the dead. He does manage to make some insults along the way, calling elderly people "easy targets" and ACE customers "stupid."

Catch more of his antics in the clip above.

Although "When the Zombies Come" beat out 8,000 other films to place at Sundance, it was not applauded by everyone, according to NBC local affiliate 11 Alive. Executives at ACE responded with a Facebook message criticizing the film:

Ace Hardware was not aware that a deplorable video encouraging violent behavior was produced and we did not approve the use of our brand or store in the filming of that video. We are aghast and outraged that these individuals used our nationally recognized brand in this film. This video does not in any way represent Ace Hardware and the thousands of hardworking Ace employees that are knowledgeable, friendly and dedicated to serving Ace customers. We are making every effort to remove this video from all online sources. We greatly value our customers as well as our "helpful" brand image and are deeply offended by the content of this video.

ACE also sent Hurst a cease-and-desist letter demanding the director remove the YouTube video due to possible damage to the brand and trademark infringement, according to 11 Alive.

Hurst, for his part, says he never meant to tarnish customers' perception of ACE. "The meaning I was hoping to express in the documentary was a dark comedic relation between killing time at work and the fandom [around zombies]," he told Social News Daily.

As for Warner, Hurst says he has not been "officially fired," but he has lost all his hours and his name has been removed from the work schedule, according to Social News Daily. He thinks ACE is "pretty much backing [Warner] into a corner to quit."

As Pentagon Opens Up Combat Positions to Women Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services Discuss Unique Needs of Female Combat Veterans

Female military service members and veterans face varied challenges when they return from active duty, like their male counterparts, but especially when it comes to issues of unemployment, homelessness and sexual traumas. As the Pentagon announced yesterday its decision to formally open up combat positions to women, representatives from Dixon Center and it?s partner Easter Seals commend the policy move and express urgency about the unique needs women veterans face upon returning home from military service.

Chicago (PRWEB) January 24, 2013

Female military service members and veterans face varied challenges when they return from active duty, like their male counterparts, but especially when it comes to issues of unemployment, homelessness and sexual traumas. As the Pentagon announced yesterday its decision to formally open up combat positions to women, representatives from Dixon Center and it?s partner Easter Seals commend the policy move and express urgency about the unique needs women veterans face upon returning home from military service.

?For our nation, formally recognizing the fact women have been and are serving valiantly in combat roles for the past 11 years is appropriate,? says Kimberly Mitchell, Deputy Director, Dixon Center. ?I do look forward to the bold policy steps that will be taken recognizing the unique needs of all our service members regarding post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries, military sexual trauma and the military's proactive steps which previously have been reactive.?

Women are far more likely than men to have experienced a military sexual trauma. Women also make up the fastest growing population of homeless individuals today ? and they?re not alone; increasingly they bring their children with them.

Mitchell?s 17 years of service in the U.S. Navy included a commission as a Surface Warfare Officer, service aboard several surface Navy combat warships, and multiple shore tours in Washington, D.C. This evening, Mitchell will be participating in a panel discussion, ?Change and Challenges ? Women in Today?s Military,? at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago, offering her insight and perspective.

?As a Navy veteran, I know women have been serving side by side their male counterparts for years. This is a watershed moment for our country and recognizes all of our service members? capabilities, valor and achievements,? adds Mitchell. ?Opening combat roles to females should not be lauded as a bold step but rather a normal progression towards equality. The military's mix of gender, races, creed, lifestyles, and backgrounds makes it a bellwether of society. This decision should not be used as an opportunity for demagoguery, but rather a chance to acknowledge our military's ability to fight and win our nations? wars.?

With this decision, Mitchell along with Dixon Center and Easter Seals urge policymakers to collaborate with the myriad of resources in the civic and private sector, as well as support and dedicate resources to all military service members, veterans, their families and the families of our fallen when they return home from their deployments and where they live. Today?s service members ? women and men alike ? are making significant contributions to their communities but some face challenges during transition and reintegration. These challenges include physical wounds as well as isolation, exasperating emotional and psychological wounds. They face unemployment, families that are not always intact, and communities unable to meet their immediate and long-term needs.

?We need to consolidate local efforts in communities and find synergies for the delivery of services or to services. We as a society need to focus on enabling their potential, and not create more cookie cutter solutions. This is our mission at Dixon Center,? concludes Mitchell.

About Dixon Center

Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services is a national clearinghouse launched in 2012. The Center is a catalyst for the consolidation of the disparate efforts underway since 9/11 that provide services to veterans, military service members, and their families. Dixon Center provides leadership to a nationwide network of support ? consisting of tens of thousands of organizations - for the delivery of services, or to services. Its team is led by Executive Director David W. Sutherland, Colonel US-Army, Retired. Easter Seals is Dixon Center's 501(c) 3 sponsor and is also one of its myriad partners that provide support and direct services to veterans and military families. Easter Seals is supporting Dixon Center to emerge and deliver on its bold mission. Dixon Center?s work will not be done until veterans and our military families can thrive; where they live. SEO services enhance your site ranking and channelizing site traffic ...

Life insurance is not easy to shop for. There are so many providers and so many options that it is all too easy to get lost. A little research can equip you to find your way. This article will present a few handy tips to keep you on the right track to good life insurance deals.

When it comes to Life Insurance, purchase it when you are young. Typically, a younger person is in good general health, so you will be able to lock in a great rate for the length of the policy. As a person gets older, they start to present more of a risk to an insurance company, and not only will the premium be more but, you may be denied coverage entirely.

If you would like more than one life insurance policy, whether you don't qualify for a policy of a high amount or because you would like extra coverage, you may want to think about the purchase of a group life insurance policy. This could be a great deal cheaper than purchasing several different policies, and can suit your needs just as well if not better.

Purchase life insurance so your family will not have to pay for your funeral costs. You may have all of your retirement needs provided for, but if there is not much left once you die, someone in your family will need to pay for funeral services and related costs. A simple, inexpensive life insurance policy can guarantee that funds will be available to take care of your funeral and not put undue financial stress on any family members.

If your life insurance needs change, consider getting a rider instead of purchasing an additional policy. A rider adds on to what you already have and typically does not cost as much money as getting another policy. This may not be true, however, if you are in very good health, so make sure to do your research.

Most life insurance policies are long term contracts. This means that once you sign the contract, you have a responsibility to make payments toward your policy. Therefore, when you are obtaining life insurance, make sure you have a firm understanding of your needs, what you are receiving and that you will be able to afford your payments. If there is anything you do not understand, do not contract yourself to the policy. Ask questions first.

Do your research. There are many different companies that sell life insurance as well as many different rating systems for each company. Take a look at the pros and cons of each as well as shop around for quotes. This will ensure that you are making the right choice with such a large decision.

When considering life insurance, be sure to look outside what your employer provides. While this may be easier and you may assume they are providing what is best for you, it is not always the case. Make sure that they rates and coverage are competitive or better than other offers that you could go with.

Make sure to get quotes on different levels of policies. Many insurance companies offer breaks at different levels of coverage that could wind up saving you money. Just because you've decided that 175,000 is all the coverage you need, doesn't mean you shouldn't get quoted on other levels just in case.

There is almost always a better deal out there when it comes to life insurance. It may not be easy to find or take advantage of. Learning is the key to zeroing in on the best deals. Hopefully you are a little better informed after reading this article, and your life insurance hunt will be a little more successful.

Sexual Fantasies: 'The Normal Bar' Finds Fantasy-Infidelity Link

Excerpted from the book THE NORMAL BAR. Copyright ? 2013 by Chrisanna Northrup, Pepper Schwartz, and James Witte. Published by Harmony, an Imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, Inc. The Normal Bar is the world's most extensive survey on romantic relationships, polling over 100,000 people and collecting over 1 million data points. The survey was conducted in 2011 using a powerful interactive survey tool called OnQ with the help of media partners The Huffington Post, Reader's Digest, AARP, iVillage, & AOL.

According to the Normal Bar data, total fidelity of mind as well as body is the rare exception. It?s not abnormal to be tempted to stray. However, for many people, this temptation poses a moral dilemma. In Western society, men and women prize the freedom to mingle freely, yet this easy access to members of the opposite sex can raise anxiety in our partners and in ourselves. No one is policing our every movement, so we have to be responsible for our own reactions when our hormones start percolating. For some, this responsibility is a real burden.

Why are fantasies about sex outside one?s primary relationship so common? In part because lust is the key to our species? survival, as it is for most animals. Geese are the only species we know of that pair only once during a lifetime; if one mate dies, the bereft partner stays unmatched until death. This is not a great model for repopulating the species, so humans have developed a strong sex drive that isn?t limited to one partner. Being able to imagine sex with alternative partners prepares us to start over in the event of death or divorce. In a sense, then, we need those fantasies of infidelity. On the other hand, because we?ve promised to be faithful, and because we know the likely and unpleasant consequences if we break that promise, most of us constrain ourselves to looking without touching.

Sexually fantasizing about other people
Just meeting another person can arouse physical or emotional attraction. This response does not turn off just because you?re in a committed relationship. The Normal Bar shows that 61% of women and 90% of men fantasize sexually about people they meet. There?s no stopping imagination!

Supporting the premise that this is an instinctive response ? rather than a reflection on the primary relationship ? we found no correlation between the duration of a relationship and the amount of lusting that goes on outside it. After your first year as a couple, you may or may not ?lust in your heart? for others, but there?s no reason to fear that your partner is daydreaming about others just because you?ve been together so long.

More surprisingly, the Normal Bar data also show virtually no connection between fantasies of infidelity and happiness in the core relationship. Temptation happens; it doesn?t matter if you are unhappy or happy with your main squeeze.

Sex with anybody you wanted for one night
Still in the realm of fantasy, we wondered what some of the secret yearnings of men and women would be if there were no negative consequences for their sexual trespasses. So we asked, ?If you had the opportunity to have sex with anybody you wanted outside your current relationship and it would have zero effect on your current relationship or family, as if it never happened, would you do it?? Men went for this fantasy by a ratio of three to two over women! Two- thirds of men (65%) and just under half of women (43%) found this a compelling proposition.

This suggests that many of us harbor a secret longing for sexual adventure and romance, even if we never act on it. We don?t want these attractions to undermine our relationship or our moral commitments, but still... we can?t help thinking about that attractive new colleague at the company picnic.

Given the normalcy of these fantasies, we also wondered if our respondents thought their partners would have sex with somebody else if given the same free pass. The responses were remarkably accurate. Men were spot-on, with 43% of men predicting their partners would go for it; and 58% of women thought their mates would seize the opportunity.

It?s one thing to be offered a ?freebie,? however, and another to actually plan, invite, or agree to sex outside the relationship. Some couples joke that each has given the other permission have sex with some cherished movie star (think: Sting, Katy Perry, George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron, Taylor Lautner), but would that really happen if the unlikely encounter occurred? And what about going beyond fantasy with that new colleague at the picnic in spite of the repercussions? This is where extreme sexual dissatisfaction can make a difference in the response. Among our dissatisfied couples, 79% of men and 65% of women said they?d jump at the chance to have sex with somebody new for one night. People who are starving are more tempted to eat, even if it?s ?forbidden fruit.? But having a very good sex life isn?t a total safeguard; 53% of men and 28% of women who are fully satisfied with sex at home are still interested in the seductive stranger or Hollywood icon.

Would you consider sex outside your relationship with somebody who propositioned you?
We are now leaving the world of fantasy and looking at real reactions to actual opportunities. Not all temptation is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes it takes the form of an overt proposition from the one beheld. And what happens then? Nearly half (48%) of women and two-thirds (69%) of men told us that if they were actually propositioned by someone they were attracted to outside their relationships they?d be tempted to act on it. It?s a good thing people aren?t more sexually forward, or we might have a lot more infidelity!

The Normal Bar does show that people who are more sexually satisfied are less likely to be tempted to have sex outside the relationship, but our overall finding here is that more overt invitations would equal more cheating. The best way to stay monogamous may be to keep your partner close when entrancing alternatives are near.

Stay tuned for more excerpts from The Normal Bar in the coming weeks.

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Casey Anthony, who was famously acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2011, saw a Florida appeals court overturn two of her four convictions on Friday for lying to detectives investigating the toddler's disappearance.

While Anthony was acquitted of murdering Caylee, whose body was ultimately found in woods near their home, she was found guilty of lying four times to detectives who responded to a 2008 call from Anthony's mother reporting the girl missing.

Anthony's lawyers appealed the convictions, saying her lies should have been construed as a single violation because her statements were made over the course of one extended interview with detectives who responded to the missing person report.

The Fifth District Court of Appeal in Daytona Beach split the difference on Friday, finding that Anthony gave two separate interviews to detectives, thus letting two convictions stand but throwing out the rest.

The court also found that Anthony was not in police custody during her interviews and rejected a defense argument that all convictions be thrown out because she was not read Miranda rights that allow her to choose not to speak to police.

Anthony's lawyer, Cheney Mason said in a statement that he was "very happy with this latest victory," adding no decision had been taken on whether to pursue further appeals.

Jeff Ashton, one of Anthony's prosecutors who is now the state attorney in Florida's Orange County, said he understood and respected the appellate court's ruling. "Once the trial court vacates the appropriate counts pursuant to the District Court's opinion, we expected the case of the State of Florida vs. Casey Marie Anthony will be closed," Ashton said in a statement.

In July 2008, Anthony told detectives that Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny, triggering a nationwide search for the girl that was followed intensely by cable television news and entertainment shows. At trial, her defense lawyers claimed Caylee drowned in the family's backyard pool.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Caylee might have been smothered by duct tape wrapped around her head before her body was left in the woods.

Anthony was convicted of lying four times when she told lead detective Yuri Melich that she left Caylee with a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, that she was employed at Universal Studios Orlando, that she told co-workers that Caylee was missing, and that she later received a phone call from Caylee.

A Central Florida woman named Zenaida Gonzalez subsequently sued Anthony for defamation. Her civil suit was delayed while Anthony refused to testify during the course of her criminal appeal.

Sarah Palin and Fox News Channel part ways

(Reuters) - Republican former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has parted ways with Fox News Channel after working for three years as a paid commentator, the cable TV network said on Friday.

Palin, who went from being a little-known governor to a political sensation after Senator John McCain picked her as his running mate in the 2008 presidential election, was one of the channel's biggest names despite appearing only occasionally.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed our association with Governor Palin," Bill Shine, Fox News Channel executive vice president of programming, said in a statement. "We wish her the best in her future endeavors."

Fox News Channel declined to give details of Palin's departure, and a spokesperson said only that the two had "parted ways."

Palin, a polarizing figure in U.S. politics, has enjoyed a strong following among many Republicans and supporters of the conservative Tea Party movement. Fox News Channel appeals to a conservative audience.

Electric car ferry to recharge in 10 minutes

1 day

From the U.S. Pacific Northwest to Norway and hundreds of points in between, every day thousands of people drive their cars onto ferries to get across bodies of water. That trip will start to have a different kind of buzz in 2015 thanks to the world?s first electrically?powered car ferry.

The 262-foot catamaran will carry up to 120 cars and 360 passengers, according to Siemens, which is building the boat with the Norwegian shipyard Fjellstrand. It will sail about a four-mile route across a fjord in Norway that connects the tiny towns of Lavik and Oppedal.

The ferry?s 11-ton batteries will recharge during the 10-minute break between runs, according to Siemens. Interestingly,?the batteries on the boat will be charged up using batteries on the dock. The dock batteries, in turn, are recharged with electricity from the grid.

The new ferry will save the approximately 264,000 gallons of diesel the current ferry burns annually and the related 2,900 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.?

The electrically?powered ferry was developed for a competition organized by Norway's Ministry of Transport. It won a license to operate the route until 2025.?

According to Siemens, all crossings in Norway shorter than 30 minutes could be served with electric ferries using today?s battery and recharging technology. If so, some of those ferries could find a home crossing parts of the Pacific Northwest?s Puget Sound.

Caught on video: Teen rescued from torrent

Video of the dramatic rescue of a teen from floodwaters in Queensland was posted on YouTube by Australia's ABC network.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

A teenage boy left clinging to a tree in a raging torrent of floodwater in Australia was pulled to safety in a dramatic rescue Friday.

As the teen was being brought to dry land ? in scenes caught on video -- the emergency worker who saved him was swept away by the churning mass of brown water in Rockhampton, Queensland.

The rescuer went under a nearby bridge but managed to reach safety moments later.

The AFP news agency reported that in total there were 20 water rescues across Queensland state Thursday night and early Friday, including a woman and two children trapped in a car and seven people in two flooded houses.

Australia?s Bureau of Meteorology said nearly a foot of rain had fallen in Yeppoon, north of Rockhampton, since early Thursday, the AFP reported. The area is being hit by the remains of tropical cyclone Oswald.

One rescuer told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation?that the boy rescued in Rockhampton was lucky to be alive. ?The current was so strong, it just took him away,? Brett Williams said.

In the video of the rescue, the boy is seen holding onto a tree amid the rushing waters.

A rescuer goes out to him and a yellow rope is seen in the water.

The two then let go of the tree and make their way to land, at times appearing to be engulfed by the waters.

'He's good, he's good'
But, as the rescuer in the water tries to transfer the teen to others on the land, he is suddenly swept away.

?He?s going under the bridge,? a voice is heard saying.

Other rescuers run after him, and moment later one is heard saying, ?He?s good, he?s good.?

The Australian broadcaster reported that ?huge rainfall totals? were expected over the weekend as Oswald tracks south, with Queensland Premier Campbell Newman warning that the state?s largest city Brisbane could be hit by flooding.

AFP said 30 people were killed and more than 2.5 million people were affected by floods in Queensland two years ago.

Dutch, Britons, Germans warned to leave Benghazi

LONDON (AP) ? Britain, Germany and the Netherlands urged their citizens to immediately leave the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Thursday, warning of an imminent threat against Westerners days after a deadly hostage crisis in neighboring Algeria.

European officials told The Associated Press that schools were among the potential targets.

The warnings came a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton testified to Congress about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. They also came as French troops battled al-Qaida-linked militants in the West African nation of Mali, and followed the deaths of at least 37 foreign hostages seized by Islamist extremists in Algeria.

It was unclear if those two events were linked to the latest concerns about Libya.

The foreign ministries of the three European countries issued statements describing the threat as specific and imminent but none would elaborate.

The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya's capital far to the west of Benghazi, said there was "no specific information pointing to specific, imminent threats against U.S. citizens."

With a population of 1 million, Benghazi is Libya's second-largest city and where the Libyan uprising against longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi began in February 2011. Gadhafi was eventually toppled and killed after NATO backed the rebel movement, and the Arab country has since struggled with increasing insecurity.

Al-Qaida-linked militants operate in Libya alongside other Islamist groups, and the country is awash in weapons looted from Gadhafi's many military depots.

Schools, businesses and offices of non-governmental organizations were among the possible targets, according to two European officials familiar with the threats. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be quoted by name in the media. They refused to give any other details.

Violence in Benghazi has targeted both foreigners as well as Libyan officials in recent months, with assassinations, bombings and other attacks.

It was not immediately clear how many people were affected by the European warnings. Britain's Foreign Office said "dozens" of its citizens were in the city, while Dutch spokesman Thijs van Son said four Dutch citizens were registered there, and possibly two more were in the city. A German Foreign Ministry official, who requested anonymity because government policy did not allow him to be quoted by name, said "very few" Germans were in Benghazi.

Several countries have for months advised against all travel to the city, especially after the U.S. mission was attacked. Residents say many foreigners had already left in recent weeks.

Air Malta canceled Thursday's flights between the Mediterranean island and Benghazi following the British advice, but said flights to Tripoli were not affected. The airline said its next flight to Benghazi was scheduled for Tuesday, adding that it will keep reviewing the situation.

Adel Mansouri, principal of the International School of Benghazi, said U.K. and foreign citizens were warned in the last few days about a possible threat to Westerners. He said the school's teachers were given the option of leaving but decided to stay.

The school has some 540 students. Most are Libyan, with some 40 percent holding dual nationality. Less than 5 percent are British, while 10 to 15 students have U.S.-Libyan nationality, he said. Classes were not due to resume until Sunday because of a holiday Thursday.

"We told the British ambassador we are staying, and we'll be in touch," said Mansouri, who has both Libyan and British citizenship. "We don't see a threat on the ground."

Saleh Gawdat, a Benghazi lawmaker, said French doctors working in the city's hospitals have left and the French cultural center was closed over concerns about potential retaliation for the French-led military intervention against Islamist militants in Mali, which began two weeks ago.

In addition to the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission, an Italian diplomat's car was fired on by militants in Benghazi earlier this month. The consul, Guido De Sanctis, wasn't injured but the attack prompted Italy to suspend its consular activities and send its foreign staff home.

Islamist extremists in the area are often blamed for targeting security officials who once worked under Gadhafi, taking revenge for those who tortured or imprisoned them in the past. Many residents also accuse Gadhafi loyalists of trying to undermine Libya's new leaders by sowing violence.

Fawzi Wanis, head of the Supreme Security Committee in Benghazi, said he did not know of an imminent threat, but "in general it is possible that something happens" in connection to Mali.

Ibrahim Sahd, a Benghazi-based lawmaker and politician, said the new government is putting together a plan to beef up security in the city and this "might have caused the Westerners to worry about a backlash."

Noman Benotman, a former Libyan jihadist with links to al-Qaida who is now an analyst at London's Quilliam Foundation, said other groups inspired by the terror network have been gaining a following in Libya since Gadhafi's fall. There have been nearly a dozen attacks against Western targets in Libya recently, he said.

"It's the same al-Qaida ideology that is driving these militants," Benotman said.

Oil companies working in other parts of Libya said they were aware of the European warnings to foreign citizens in Benghazi but said there were no immediate plans for evacuations.

Duct-taped students: Should Ohio teacher be fired?

Duct-taped students: A harmless prank?? An Ohio middle-school math teacher may be fired for posting Facebook photo of her duct-taped students.

A northeast Ohio middle-school teacher has until later this week to respond to an allegation that she posted a Facebook photo of her students with their mouths covered with duct tape.

The Akron Public Schools Board of Education voted last week to pursue the firing of Melissa Cairns. She's a math teacher at Buchtel Community Learning Center.

The school district says the photo, posted on Cairn's personal Facebook page, showed 8 or 9 out of her 16 students with duct tape across their mouths. The caption read: "Finally found a way to get them to be quiet!!!" The district says a colleague of Cairns' notified a supervisor of the photo.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Cairns was put on paid leave Oct. 19. She hasn't responded to requests for comment. Pending Cairns? request for a hearing, the board is expected to vote on Cairns? termination at its next meeting on Jan. 28.

The Akron's NewsChannel5 quotes Cairn's as saying that the students started taping their mouths as a joke. Her mistake was to post the picture on Facebook.

Cairn says she gave a girl a roll of duct tape to fix her binder, but the student cut a piece of tape, placed it over her mouth and laughed.

"The other kids in the class thought it was funny also, and they proceeded to pass the tape and scissors around the class. The students, the majority of the class, ended up putting a piece of duct tape across their mouth," Cairns explained.

"I would never in a million years do anything to harm students," Cairns said.

Ironically, Cairns spends much of her time outside of the classroom speaking out against domestic violence. She organizes a marathon in Kent called "On My Own Two Feet", which benefits local women's shelters

.

The teacher's situation has prompted a lively discussion on the Akron Beacon comment section, including:

?

16 students with duct tape across their mouths and a caption that read: ?Finally found a way to get them to be quiet!!!? Is not even worth a complaint let alone a termination. The board should be let go.? - Indian2

Can't imagine half a dozen or more 13 year-olds leaving duct tape on their mouths for a picture, unless their hands were taped, too. Ergo I suspect this was a joke.

And, if it was a joke and the kids were in on it, perhaps she's actually reached some of them - kids at a tough age in a tough school.

Maybe she's actually a GOOD teacher? - In_credulous

______

Based on the initial facts, I would have been inclined to believe this was just a 'for a chuckle' incident with willing participants.

While innocent fun, in this day and age it would be deemed inappropriate and the teacher would be privately reprimanded.

But for this situation to have taken approximately 4 months to deal with and for the school board to notify the teacher (and the union) of their intent to fire her for the incident, I have to believe there is a LOT more going on here, either in this teacher's past or revolving around this matter. ? Nokia Drive beta now available for all WP8 users in US, Canada and UK

Nokia Drive+ is still in beta but, starting today, more people can take part in the navigational fun. The app has been freed from its Lumia exclusive bonds and is now available in the US, Canada and the UK on any Windows Phone 8 device. The download is free, but it's important to keep in mind that this is still a beta product -- so we can't make any guarantees about stability or compatibility. Still, the turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps are likely a huge improvement over whatever carrier-branded substitute you've been saddled with until now. Hit up the source for a few more details and to dig up a download link.

Journalist Barbara Walters hospitalized after fall at Washington party

(Reuters) - Veteran journalist Barbara Walters was admitted to a Washington. D.C., hospital over the weekend after she fell and cut her head at the British ambassador's residence, a spokesman for the ABC television network said on Sunday.

Jeffrey Schneider, a senior vice president with ABC News, said Walters fell on the stairs on Saturday evening while attending an event.

"Out of an abundance of caution," Walters, 83, went to the hospital, where she remained for observation on Sunday, Schneider said.

"Barbara is alert (and telling everyone what to do), which we all take as a very positive sign," Schneider said in a written statement.
